The Samsung Galaxy S7 is a smartphone that was presented by the manufacturer Samsung on February 21, 2016 in advance of the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the same time as the Galaxy S7 Edge . The devices are the successors to the Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphones from the Samsung Galaxy series. The official start of sales in Germany was on March 11, 2016.
The device was the test winner at Stiftung Warentest 5/2016 and also topped the Connect best list 5/2016.
technology
screen
The screen of the S7 Edge is 5.5 inches diagonally 0.4 inches larger than that of the Galaxy S7. Both devices use AMOLED technology with 1,440 × 2,560 pixels, which results in a lower pixel density of 534 ppi in the Edge because of the larger area ; that of the S7 is 577 ppi.
power
Samsung's own eight-core SoC Exynos 8890 is installed in Europe . Four ARM Cortex-A53 cores are clocked at 1.6 GHz and four Samsung Exynos M1 “Mongoose” cores are clocked at 2.3 GHz. In China and the USA, however, Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 820 is used, in which two of the cryo-cores are clocked at 1.6 GHz and two at 2.15 GHz. Both variants are manufactured using the 14 nm process and are capable of 64-bit addressing, which enables the LPDDR4 main memory, which has increased to 4 GB.
camera
Compared to the predecessor with 16 megapixels, the resolution of the rear camera of the S7 has shrunk to 12 MP . The higher f-number of f / 1.7 and also the pixel size, which has grown to 1.4 μm , should, in return, ensure greater light sensitivity. The camera has an optical image stabilizer and a new "dual pixel" technology, which is supposed to ensure faster and less error-prone focusing thanks to the phase comparison autofocus .
Like the S6, the indoor camera still has a resolution of 5 MP and films with 1440p at 30fps, but is also equipped with an f / 1.7 aperture.
The supported video formats of the rear camera have remained the same compared to the predecessor: Normal Full HD recordings can be recorded at 60 fps , and 4K / UHD recordings are also possible. However, slow-motion videos with sound in 720p resolution can be recorded at 240fps, twice the refresh rate of its predecessor. In addition, 2160p (4K) video recordings are no longer limited to five minutes as with their predecessors.
Like the previous model, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge use camera sensors from different manufacturers. The Sony IMX260 or your own ISOCELL S5K2L1 are used here.
Charging and battery
The Galaxy S7 can be charged using a classic micro USB cable, and charging by electromagnetic induction is also possible using the Qi standard , as with its predecessors . As with the previous models, Samsung is once again bringing an induction charger onto the market with the Galaxy S7 - the "Qi fast charger" Samsung EP-NG930. A USB Type-C port was not used, as there was no waterproof variant on the market at the time.
According to the manufacturer, a full battery charge for the Galaxy S7 with cable and wireless takes 90 and 140 minutes, and for the Galaxy S7 Edge 100 and 160 minutes respectively.
The power of charging is limited to about 6 watts when the screen is switched on.
The battery capacity of the S7 has been increased by 450 mAh to a total of 3000 mAh. While testers of the predecessor complained that the battery had become significantly smaller, the one built into the S7 is the largest that has been used in a Samsung Galaxy S device so far. However, it still cannot be replaced.
Housing and design
The appearance of the S7 hardly differs from its predecessor, the S6. The edges of the back are rounded, which should make the device more ergonomic. The camera lens protrudes less from the back than that of the S6. As with the predecessor, the materials glass and aluminum are used for the housing. If the S6 did not have waterproof protection, the S7 is again dust and water protected according to IP68 . In contrast to the previous model, there is also a slot for micro SD cards.
