particularities

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a smartphone that was presented by the manufacturer Samsung on March 29, 2017 in New York at the same time as the Galaxy S8 + . The devices are the successors to the Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones from the Samsung Galaxy series. The official start of sales in Germany was on April 28, 2017.

technology

screen

In both the Galaxy S8 and the S8 +, the display edges are now slightly bent backwards, which means that there is no longer an Edge version like the predecessor Galaxy S7. This also increases the size of the screen to that of its predecessor, it is now 5.8 inches (S8) or 6.2 inches (S8 +) with a resolution of 2960 × 1440 pixels . The pixel density is thus slightly reduced to 570 or 529 ppi. Samsung still uses AMOLED technology. By eliminating the physical buttons, the display could also be extended upwards and downwards, resulting in a screen ratio of 37:18 (18.5: 9). In addition, the display corners are now rounded, otherwise the display could not be that big.

power

Samsung's own eight-core SoC  Exynos  8895 is installed in Europe. Four ARM Cortex-A53 cores are clocked at 1.69  GHz and four Samsung Exynos M2 "Mongoose" cores are clocked at 2.31 GHz. In China and the USA, however, Qualcomm's eight-core Snapdragon  835 is used, in which four of the cryo-cores are clocked at 1.9 GHz and four at 2.45 GHz. Both variants are manufactured using the 10 nm process and master 64-bit addressing, and a 4 GB LPDDR4 main memory is still used.

Cameras

There are no major changes to the predecessor for the rear camera. Samsung still relies on a resolution of 12 MP and an aperture of f / 1.7. The camera also has an optical image stabilizer and the "dual pixel" technology, which  should ensure faster and less error-prone focusing thanks to the  phase comparison autofocus . Two different sensor chips are used again: a Sony IMX333 or an ISOCELL S5K2L2 from our own production. The resolution of the front camera has been increased from 5 MP to 8 MP and has an autofocus, which should enable sharper selfies. There is also a 4 MP front camera for the iris scanner, which unlocks the device.

The supported video formats of the rear camera have remained the same compared to the predecessor: normal FullHD recordings can be recorded at 60  fps , films in 4K / UHD are also possible at 30 frames per second. Slow motion videos can be filmed at 720p (HD) at 240 frames per second.

Charging and battery

The Galaxy S8 can be charged using a USB-C cable, and charging by electromagnetic induction is also possible, as with its predecessors, using the  Qi and AirFuel standards (formerly PMA).

The battery capacity of the S8 is 3000 mAh and has therefore remained the same as that of the S7. The capacity of the S8 + has been reduced by 100 mAh compared to the S7 Edge, it is now 3500 mAh. Both batteries can still not be exchanged.

Fast charging via Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 with outputs of up to 15 watts is possible when the screen is switched off, but the charging capacity is limited to less than half that when the screen is switched on.

Housing and design

Both versions now have a display that is curved on both sides. In addition, unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy S8 no longer has a physical home button. As a result, the fingerprint sensor has also been moved to the back of the device next to the rear camera. As with the predecessor, the materials glass and aluminum are used for the housing, the S8 and S8 +, like the S7, are  dust and water- proof according to  IP68 . The slot for micro SD cards has also remained. With the dimensions 148.9 mm × 68.1 mm, the Galaxy S8 has grown slightly compared to the S7, also the S8 + compared to the S7 Edge with the dimensions 159.5 mm × 73.4 mm.

Voice assistant

Together with the Galaxy S8, Samsung has presented its own voice assistant called "Bixby". It detects objects via the camera and provides further information about them. For example, Bixby provides information on where to buy the items. At the start of sales, however, the language assistant only works without a spoken language, and is very limited in non-English or Korean-speaking areas. The Galaxy S8 has a Bixby button which, when pressed, displays current weather forecasts and news.

As an alternative to Bixby, the integrated voice assistant Google Assistant can also be used, which offers a much more extensive range of functions.
