IEEE 802.11ac

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IEEE 802.11ac or Wi-Fi 5 is a standard for wireless computer networks from the 802.11 family, known under the more common name WLAN , also known as Wi-Fi in English-speaking regions . The development was promoted by the IEEE primarily with regard to high data rates in the 5 GHz band. The actual standard was adapted several times from 2011 to 2013 and finally passed. The final report and the official standardization were published on December 18, 2013.

The standard provides for a single channel throughput of up to 867 megabits per second. This is achieved primarily through further development of the techniques used in the IEEE 802.11n standard: larger channel bandwidths of up to 160 MHz and improved signal modulation; in addition, up to eight multiple connections (8 × 8 MIMO ) are provided. In purely mathematical terms, this would result in a maximum throughput of 6933 megabits per second. In trade (as of the end of 2015), however, practically only devices with 4 × 4 multi-user MIMO, 80 MHz bandwidth and 1733 Mbit / s can be found.

Changes from 802.11n

  • wider channels possible (80 MHz, 160 MHz channel width optional)
  • multiple MIMO connections (up to eight)
  • Downstream multi-user MIMO (must be supported by the access point and client, typically 2 to 3 MU-MIMO clients simultaneously)
  • Higher modulation levels with a very good received signal (256-QAM with 3/4 and 5/6 FEC)
  • Standardized beamforming
