The ordinance on the sulfur content of certain liquid fuels (3rd BImSchV), which was valid from 2002 to 2010, pursued the goal of reducing the sulfur content of heating oil and diesel fuels . It replaced the ordinance on the sulfur content of light heating oil and diesel fuel of January 15, 1975. At the same time, the regulation was a national implementation of Directives 1999/32 / EC and 93/12 / EEC.

For diesel fuel, a limit of 350 mg / kg initially applied, which was reduced to 50 mg / kg from January 1, 2005 and to 10 mg / kg from July 11, 2009. The limit value for heating oil and gas oil was initially at a mass fraction of 0.2 percent and was reduced to 0.1 percent on January 1, 2008. Exceptions were mainly made for shipping and supply bottlenecks.

At the end of 2010, this ordinance was replaced by the ordinance on the composition and labeling of the qualities of fuels .
