The ordinance to limit the emissions of volatile organic compounds when transferring and storing petrol, fuel mixtures or raw petrol (20th BImSchV) deals with systems for the storage, transferring and transportation of petrol .
It is of great practical importance
- in systems in which petrol is stored ( tank farms ),
- when transferring these fuels from a tank farm to road tankers , rail tank cars or barges
- and when filling petrol stations with petrol.
These processes result in considerable emissions of volatile organic compounds ( abbreviation : VOC) due to evaporation . The main aim of this regulation is to reduce these emissions. This is mainly achieved through the obligation to use gas displacement systems .
This regulation does not deal with the actual refueling of motor vehicles at filling stations; the 21st BImSchV applies here .
