Please note the note on the applicable legal version.

The ordinance on the limitation of hydrocarbon emissions when refueling motor vehicles (21st BImSchV) has practical, everyday significance when refueling vehicles at gas stations.

At each refueling of a fuel tank with gasoline leak petrol vapors from the tank to be filled of a vehicle. In the past, this was associated with considerable emissions of volatile organic compounds . The main aim of this regulation is to reduce the release of these fuel vapors.

The ordinance therefore stipulates that gasoline pumps must be equipped with gas recirculation devices. In this way, the volume of gas displaced during refueling is fed back to the storage tank of the filling station, where it replaces the fuel volume that is simultaneously fed to the vehicle tank.

In addition, automatic monitoring devices are required to ensure that fuel delivery is automatically interrupted if faults in the gas recirculation system are not remedied within 72 hours.
