The ordinance on cremation facilities (27th BImSchV) contains immission control regulations for air pollution control when operating crematoria . It only applies to facilities for the cremation of the human corpse. Animal crematories are not covered by this ordinance.

The main aim of the regulation is to reduce the emission of air pollutants from the chimneys of the crematoria. To achieve this, it prescribes binding emission limits for dust , carbon monoxide and organic substances as well as for dioxins and furans . Crematoria in Germany are therefore equipped with modern flue gas cleaning systems. In addition, the regulation provides for regular measurements and monitoring obligations.

Mercury from crematoria

At the cremation of the Zahnplombenträgern in the volatilized amalgam fillings contained mercury . The amount of mercury per corpse varies greatly: the mass fraction of individual amalgam fillings is usually between 0.1 and 1 g of mercury, in individual cases up to 2 g. The regulation does not provide for a limit value for mercury, i. H. In principle, no mercury filters are required in the construction and operation of crematoriums, and without these, mercury can escape from the chimney into the ambient air.

In the case of planned new buildings, environmental protection associations, citizens' groups, residents and other stakeholders sometimes express concern about increased levels of mercury.

The Federal Environment Ministry , which is responsible for the regulation, sees no need for a mercury limit value for various reasons, including the increasing use of other dental materials . If the licensing authority (usually the municipality) nevertheless considers the use of mercury filters to be necessary due to the local conditions, it can, however, prescribe such filters or other further requirements for the construction and operation of crematoriums ( Section 13 of the Ordinance).

Such mercury filters are prescribed for a large number of municipal crematoria. In addition to entrained flow processes with various adsorbents (e.g. activated carbon ), fixed bed filters and washers are used. Simpler exhaust gas cleaning devices, such as B. Bag filters do not hold back mercury.
