Evernote is an online service and associated software that helps you collect, organize, and find notes , documents, and photos in a variety of formats.

The company, based in Redwood City , was founded in 2000 by the native Azerbaijanist Stepan Patschikow (* 1950). The web service started in June 2008 and after three years already reached 11 million users. Current (12/2019) CEO is Ian Small .

history

After it was founded by Stepan Pachikov in 2000, EverNote (at that time still written with uppercase "N") began marketing handwriting recognition and note-taking software for Windows desktop and tablet PCs and PDAs such as ritePen (handwriting recognition program) and EverNote ( also with uppercase "N"), a note and web clipping program that worked with an "endless roll of paper". After Phil Libin took over the CEO position , Evernote (now with lowercase "n") turned to the web, smartphones (such as the Apple iPhone) and "cloud sync" in 2007. The Evernote Web Service began as an open beta on June 24, 2008 and had 34 million users as of June 2012, of which 1.4 million are premium paid users.

In October 2010, the company received a capital contribution of 20 million US dollars from Sequoia Capital with participation from Morgenthaler Ventures and DoCoMo Capital. Since then, the company has received an additional $ 50 million from Sequoia Capital and Morgenthaler Ventures. In May 2012, the company secured a further contribution of US $ 70 million (approx. EUR 53 million ) from investors Meritech Capital and CBC Capital, which should bring the company to around US $ 1 billion. According to its own statements, the company's goal is to survive a hundred years from now.

Evernote was hacked on February 28, 2013. The company then reset all passwords for the 50 million user accounts. According to information from the service, user names , e-mail addresses and encrypted passwords could be read, but the attackers had no access to the stored user data. As a consequence of the incident, Evernote introduced two-factor authentication , which can be used to additionally secure the account.

Concept and usage

Evernote is a web-based note-taking service that allows you to take notes on your computer and on the go. In addition to the web editor that runs in the browser , there are apps for some operating systems. By plug-ins , the software from web browsers and can e-mail programs are used out. The user can save notes, graphics or documents from various sources ( PC , Internet, e-mail). Evernote sorts the objects and makes them available to the user for retrieval in various ways, for example chronologically, by tags or by title. In addition, all objects are indexed for the search functions. Text recognition, which recognizes handwriting to a certain extent, is used to capture recognized text content from scanned or photographed objects, so that it is also possible to search for image-captured text content. Evernote offers the possibility to edit objects, send them as e-mails and share them with other users.

Evernote can also be used as a to-do list , as it offers the creation of check-off lists and entire notes can be defined as tasks. With a reminder function you can be reminded of a note on a specific date.

The notes are saved in a proprietary format that can be exported as a file from the desktop software. For example, the notes can be saved in HTML and thus transferred to an open format.

variants

Evernote is sold in the freemium model, so using a basic account is free. A note can only have a maximum of 25 megabytes and the monthly upload limit is 60 megabytes. The premium account costs $ 5 a month or $ 45 a year. Evernote Premium offers, among other things, 10 GB monthly upload with a maximum of 200 MB per note, more options for information exchange, a full text search in PDF documents and a presentation mode.

Since 2015 Evernote Plus has been available as a cheaper offer for 20 euros per year. You get 1 GB upload per month with a maximum of 50 MB per note and the option to use the note collections even without an internet connection, as well as password lock on mobile devices. There is no option to search through files, convert PDFs, scan, integrate docs in presentations and versioning of notes.

Evernote Business has been available since the end of 2012, with which several user profiles can be created and managed centrally. This type of account contains a central store that can be shared by several sub-accounts. In addition to notes, any files can also be stored in the so-called company database and annotated.

In June 2016, the synchronization for the free basic account was restricted to two devices. At the same time, the prices for the Plus account were increased to 29.99 euros and for the Premium account to 59.99 euros. The reason given by the company was to invest in core products and to want to make them even more efficient.

software

Evernote offers native apps for several operating systems, including for Windows and Mac OS as well as for Android - iOS - Blackberry - and Windows Phone - smartphones . In addition, the notes can also be viewed and edited in the browser using the web editor.

Evernote also offers other programs that work with and complement the Note Service:

  • Skitch , a software for editing and annotating images (since January 22, 2016 only for Mac)
  • Penultimate , a tablet app for taking handwritten notes on the iPad

For Linux there is the open source version Nevernote, which is now being further developed under the name Nixnote.
