Cumulopuntia pyrrhacantha is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet pyrrhacantha means '(Latin pyrrhacanthus) with fiery red spines'.

description

Cumulopuntia pyrrhacantha grows low and shrubby. The egg-shaped to ellipsoidal, glossy yellowish green shoot sections are warty and up to 2 centimeters long. The areoles cover the shoot sections. The top of them have five to eight strong, yellowish red thorns that are up to 4 centimeters long.

The golden yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 3.5 centimeters. The thornless pericarpel is bare at its base. In the upper area there are glochid-bearing areoles.

Distribution and systematics

Cumulopuntia pyrrhacantha is widespread in the high Andes of the Bolivian department of La Paz , the Peruvian region of Tacna and in the north of neighboring Chile .

The first description as Opuntia pyrrhacantha was in 1898 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Friedrich Ritter placed the species in the genus Cumulopuntia in 1981 . A nomenclature synonym is Tephrocactus pyrrhacanthus (K.Schum.) Backeb. (1958).
