Cumulopuntia is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Latin noun "cumulus" for heap and refers to the growth habit of the plants.
description
The species of the genus Cumulopuntia grow low and form densely branched cushions. The spherical, elliptical or egg-shaped shoot sections are plump and about 10 centimeters long. The tiny, 9.5 to 5 millimeter long leaves are mostly cylindrical and fall off early. The areoles have glochids , hair, and usually thorns .
The red or yellow flowers close at night. The elliptical, egg to spherical fruits are thick-walled and fleshy. They contain spherical to spherical egg-shaped to pear-shaped, beige to brown, sometimes wrinkled seeds 3 to 5.5 millimeters in length.
