Cumulopuntia tortispina is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet tortispina means '(lat. Tortispinus) with twisted spines'.
description
Cumulopuntia tortispina forms cushions. The elliptical to egg-shaped, strongly humped shoot sections are up to 7 centimeters long. The large and sunken areoles are missing at the base of the shoot sections. The upper areoles carry up to 20 needle-like, spreading, occasionally outwardly curved or comb-shaped spines that are up to 5 centimeters long.
The yellow, red or purple colored flowers have a length of up to 5 centimeters. Your pericarpel is only covered with areoles along the edge, which have reddish brown bristles. The cylindrical, smooth fruits are up to 4 inches long. There are 3 to 5 millimeter long bristles on the edge.
Distribution and systematics
Cumulopuntia tortispina is common in the high altitudes of the Chilean region of Antofagasta .
It was first described in 1980 by Friedrich Ritter . A synonym is Opuntia guatinensis D.R.Hunt (1997).
