Cumulopuntia recurvata is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet recurvata means '(Latin recurvatus) curved back, bent back'.

description

Cumulopuntia recurvata forms compact, slightly to strongly arched pads with diameters of up to 30 centimeters. The bluish-gray-green, obtuse egg-shaped to somewhat spherical, strongly humped shoot sections are 2 to 3 centimeters long and have a diameter of 1.8 to 3 centimeters. The round areoles are sunk deep into the shoot sections and are richly covered with white glochids . Two to six light gray, irregularly curved and twisted, hardly piercing thorns with a rough surface and 2 to 5 centimeters long arise from them .

The white flowers are tinted purple towards their tips and are about 3 centimeters long. Your funnel-shaped pericarpel is covered with several areoles, which carry one to two (rarely up to four) sturdy thorns up to 1.2 centimeters in length. The light brown, jug-shaped fruits do not open and dry up. They reach a length of about 2 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Cumulopuntia recurvata is common in the Argentine province of San Juan at altitudes of 850 to 2350 meters.

It was first described in 2001 by Klaus Gilmer and Hans-Peter Thomas . Nomenclatory synonyms are Maihueniopsis recurvata (Gilmer & HPThomas) R. Kiesling (2003) and Tephrocactus recurvatus (Gilmer & HPThomas) DRHunt & Ritz (2011).

Roberto Kiesling suspected in 2003 that the species is a natural hybrid between the genera Maihueniopsis and Tephrocactus .
