Tephrocactus is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek word tephra for "ash", which refers to the ash-colored shoots of some species.

description

The small, bushy species of the genus Tephrocactus branch at the tip of the shoot or just before it, so that the shoots stand in vertical rows. The roots are fibrous. The shoot sections are cylindrical or vice versa ovoid and noticeably articulated. Their small, cylindrical leaves fall off early. The areoles have hairs, glochids, and thorns . They are sunk into spherical or pear-shaped caves that only have a small opening.

The terminally appearing, wide open flowers are white, pinkish-white, yellow or red. They open in the day.

The dry, tearing fruits are covered with glochids and only rarely with a few thorns. The seeds , of different sizes, are yellowish white to brown and are compressed on the sides.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Tephrocactus are common in the Argentine provinces from Chubut to Salta .

The first description of the genus was made in 1868 by Charles Lemaire . The type species of the genus is Opuntia diademata . The genus includes the following species:

Tephrocactus articulatus (Pfeiff.) Backeb.
Tephrocactus geometricus (A.Cast.) Backeb.
Tephrocactus molinensis (Speg.) Backeb.
Tephrocactus weberi (Speg.) Backeb.

Numerous species previously assigned to the genus belong to the Cumulopuntia genus .

Synonyms of genus are Ursopuntia P.V.Heath (1999) and Quasitephrocactus G.Popov (2012) nom. illegal. (ICBN Art. 52.1).
