Tephrocactus weberi is a species of plant in the genus Tephrocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Tephrocactus weberi grows upright as a small shrub or forms cushions with shoots branching at the base or above and reaches heights of up to 20 centimeters. The fresh green to brownish green, cylindrical shoot segments are tightly humped. They are 3 to 10 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter. The humps are indistinct. The areoles are small. There are few reddish glochids . The 3 to 10 needle-like, piercing or flexible thorns are white to yellow, brown, pink or blackish and 3 to 5 centimeters long. The upper spines are protruding while the lower ones lie against the surface of the drive segment and are thinner.
The yellow to orange-yellow or pink to red flowers are 2 to 2.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 2 to 4 centimeters. The egg-shaped pericarpel is humped and densely covered with thorns. The more or less spherical, thin-walled, humped fruits are thorny and dry. They have a diameter of about 1 centimeter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Tephrocactus weberi is common in the Argentine provinces of Salta , Tucumán , Catamarca , La Rioja and San Juan on stony soils or weathered granite rocks at altitudes of 700 to 2000 meters. It was first described as Opuntia weberi in 1905 by Carlos Luis Spegazzini . In 1936 Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Tephrocactus .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
