Tephrocactus geometricus is a species of the genus Tephrocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Tephrocactus geometricus grows loosely branched and is up to 15 centimeters high. The spherical, light green and sometimes purple-tinged shoot segments are flat humped, older ones are corked and are up to 3.5 centimeters in diameter. The areoles are brownish. The black to white thorns are subpulate, close to the shoots and 0.5 to 1.0 centimeters long. There are 3 to 5 pieces per areole, they are absent on the lower areoles.

The white flowers are up to 3 inches long. The dry and depressed spherical fruits are 1.5 to 2.2 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Tephrocactus geometricus is distributed in the north of Argentina in the province of Catamarca in the area of Fiambalá on gravel plains and slopes.

The species was first described in 1934 by Alberto Castellanos as Opuntia geometrica . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Tephrocactus as early as 1936 .
