Tephrocactus aoracanthus is a species of plant in the genus Tephrocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Tephrocactus aoracanthus grows in groups or becomes shrubby for a short time and reaches heights of growth of 30 to 100 centimeters with a diameter of 1 to 3 meters. The elliptical to egg-shaped shoot segments are up to 5 to 10 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 8 centimeters. They are moderately to strongly humped . There are up to 30 areoles per shoot segment . Thorns usually arise only from the areoles in the upper two thirds of the segments. The 7 to 8 strong, very unequal, reddish brown to black, rounded to slightly angular thorns are protruding to spread out. They are 2 to 15 centimeters (rarely up to 25 centimeters) long. They are often twisted and interwoven.
The white to light pink flowers are 4 to 6 centimeters long and 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter. Your pericarpel is up to 3 centimeters long and 2 centimeters in diameter. There are occasional thorns up to 1.5 centimeters long at the top of the pericarpel. The spherical to egg-shaped, light brown fruits reach a diameter of 3 centimeters. They are not thorny or have a few thorns.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Tephrocactus aoracanthus is widespread in Argentina on stony plains at altitudes of 400 to 2000 meters. It was first described as Opuntia aoracantha in 1838 by Charles Lemaire . In 1868 he placed them in the genus Tephrocactus .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
