Tephrocactus alexanderi is a species of the genus Tephrocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Tephrocactus alexanderi grows in loose to compact groups up to 100 centimeters in diameter and up to 50 centimeters high. The spherical shoot segments are somewhat elongated and humped and are 2.5 to 6 inches long and 3 to 7 inches in diameter. Up to 100 thorny areoles are formed per segment . The straight, round and strong thorns are usually protruding. Up to 15, sometimes up to 25, are formed per areole. They are usually gray or brown in color.

The white to pink colored flowers are 3 to 7 inches long and 4 to 11 inches in diameter. The spherical or short cylindrical pericarpell is 1 to 2 centimeters long and has many thorns. The spherical to egg-shaped fruits are up to 2.5 centimeters long and up to 2.2 centimeters in diameter. They are greenish gray to reddish gray in color, thin-walled and mostly covered with thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Tephrocactus alexanderi is distributed in the north of Argentina in the provinces of Catamarca , La Rioja , San Juan and San Luis on very dry and stony soils at altitudes of 500 to 1500 meters (also up to 2800 meters).

The first description of the species as Opuntia alexanderi was in 1923 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Tephrocactus in 1953 . There are numerous synonyms .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
