Cumulopuntia chichensis is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet chichensis means' named after the place where it was found in the province of Chichas in Bolivia.

Cumulopuntia chichensis forms dense cushions with a diameter of 1 meter and more. The grass-green, squat, ellipsoidal, humped shoot sections are up to 10 centimeters long. The humps are somewhat rhomboid. On the sides of the shoot sections they form a network pattern, in the area of ​​the tips they are brick-shaped. About 20 areoles sit on the shoot sections , which extend far to the base on their sides. Thorns arise from about half of the areoles. The up to 16 and more, very variable, whitish thorns are straight to curved, spread out and interlocking. They are up to 2 inches long.

The golden yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 5 centimeters. The pericarpel is bristly or has only a few glochids . The spherical to ellipsoidal, light greenish yellow fruits are up to 5 centimeters long and almost unarmed.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cumulopuntia chichensis is widespread in the Bolivian departments of Cochabamba , Oruro , Potosí and Tarija as well as in the Argentine province of Jujuy in the Puna vegetation at altitudes of 3250 to 3850 meters.

It was first described as Tephrocactus chichensis in 1952 by Martín Cárdenas . Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in the genus Cumulopuntia in 1999 .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Opuntia chichensis (Cárdenas) GDRowley (1958) and Austrocylindropuntia chichensis (Cárdenas) GDRowley (2006).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
