Cumulopuntia ignescens is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet ignescens is derived from the Latin verb ignescere for 'on fire' and refers to the color of the flowers. Trivial names are "Jala-Jala" and "Puskayo".

Cumulopuntia ignescens forms dense and occasionally bulging pads. The strong, broad, egg-shaped shoot sections are tapered and slightly pointed. They are up to 8 centimeters long and conspicuously humped in the area of ​​the shoot section tips. The approximately 15 areoles are located on the upper part of the shoot sections. The up to 20 thorns arise only from the uppermost areoles. They are upright, reddish brown, stand close together and up to 8 inches long. Some of them are strong and some are thinner.

The red to orange-yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 3.5 centimeters. The almost areoleless pericarpel is only thorny at the edges. The barrel-shaped fruits are covered with numerous thorns up to 6 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

The distribution area of Cumulopuntia ignescens extends from the Peruvian regions of Arequipa and Puno south to the Chilean region of Antofagasta and west to the Bolivian departments of La Paz , Oruro and Potosí . There the species is widespread at altitudes of 4000 to 4700 meters on the west side of the Andes .

It was first described as Opuntia ignescens in 1913 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Friedrich Ritter placed the species in the genus Cumulopuntia in 1980 .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Tephrocactus ignescens (Vaupel) Backeb. (1934), Parviopuntia boliviana (Vaupel) Marn.-Lap. & Soulaire (1956, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 43.1) and Cumulopuntia boliviana subsp. ignescens (Vaupel) DRHunt (2002).
