Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel

Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel (born May 23, 1876 in Kreuznach ; † May 4, 1927 in Berlin ) was a German botanist and cactus specialist. Its botanical author abbreviation is " Vaupel "; the abbreviation “ Vaup. " in use.

Live and act

After finishing high school, Vaupel entered the military, which he gave up as a lieutenant due to an accident in 1895. He then studied natural sciences in Munich. From 1899 to 1900 he interrupted his studies for a trip to Mexico and the West Indies . In 1903 he was at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Dr. phil. PhD. He then went on a long trip abroad to India, Australia and Samoa.

Vaupel became assistant on January 1, 1908, from February 1, assistant at the Botanical Museum Berlin. From May 1, 1921 until his death, Vaupel was curator at the Berlin Botanical Garden ; on April 1, 1926 he received the title of professor and curator at the museum . Vaupel's assistant Erich Werdermann was appointed as his successor as curator .

From 1910 to 1927 Vaupel was chairman of the German Cactus Society .

Vaupel was editor of the Zeitschrift für Sukkulentenkunde . He worked on the work Blooming Cacti, published from 1900 to 1921 and edited by Karl Moritz Schumann and Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke . He contributed “Cactaceae” (Volume 21 of the 2nd edition) to the work The Plant Families of Carl Prantl and Adolf Engler .

Honors

The genus Vaupelia Brand. from the family of Borage Family (Boraginaceae) has been named after him. The kind epitheta of several plant species ( vaupelii , vaupeliana , vaupelianum , vaupelianus ) have also been awarded in his honor.
