Cumulopuntia corotilla is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet corotilla is the native (Peruvian) name. A Spanish common name is "Corotilla".

description

Cumulopuntia corotilla forms small shrubs that easily disintegrate into shoot sections. The almost spherical to slightly elongated, slightly humped shoot sections are 4 to 5 centimeters long. The 20 to 25 areoles are actually distributed over the entire surface of the shoot sections, but spines arise only from the uppermost areoles. The one to seven thorns , which are occasionally missing, are protruding and up to 3 centimeters long.

The initially cream-colored flowers later turn pink and reach lengths of up to 3.5 centimeters. The inverted conical pericarpel is almost completely covered with areoles, some of which have thorns.

Distribution and systematics

Cumulopuntia corotilla is widespread in the Peruvian region of Arequipa at altitudes of over 3000 meters.

It was first described as Opuntia corotilla in 1913 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in the genus Cumulopuntia in 1999 .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Tephrocactus corotilla (K.Schum. Ex Vaupel) Backeb. (1953) and Parviopuntia corotilla (K.Schum. Ex Vaupel) Marn.-Lap. & Soulaire (1956, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 43.1).
