description

Cumulopuntia rossiana forms compact, small pads. The very short, egg-shaped, gray-green shoot sections are up to 2 centimeters long. On them there are sharply delineated polygonal cusps. The ten to 15 areoles are mostly on the upper part of the shoot sections. They are narrow, elongated, white and only one to three thorns arise from their upper end . Occasionally, up to six thorns are present or absent entirely. The whitish to brownish thorns are uneven, strong, sub-like, sometimes flattened, bent downwards at the base and up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The yellow, orange, brownish-red or red flowers reach lengths of up to 4 centimeters. The upside-down conical pericarpel is set along the edge with areoles from which glochids and occasionally a few small thorns arise. The barrel-shaped fruits are wider than long and covered with long glochids.
