Cumulopuntia tumida is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet tumida means '(Latin tumidus) swelling, swollen'.

description

Cumulopuntia tumida has a loosely shrubby growth. The spherical to briefly ellipsoidal shoot sections are up to 10 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The 90 or more areoles protruding when young are distributed over the entire shoot section. One to seven whitish thorns with a brown tip arise from them , which can occasionally be missing. The thorns are unequal, and the larger ones sub-sub-like. They are up to 4 inches long.

The golden yellow flowers are up to 3.5 centimeters long. Your pericarpel is only covered with areoles in the area of ​​the tip, which have small, fine thorns. The pressed fruits reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters. They are covered with fine thorns.

Distribution and systematics

Cumulopuntia tumida is widespread near the coast in the Peruvian region of Arequipa .

It was first described in 1981 by Friedrich Ritter . A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia tumida (F.Ritter) DRHunt (1997).
