Cumulopuntia tumida is a species of plant in the genus Cumulopuntia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet tumida means '(Latin tumidus) swelling, swollen'.
description
Cumulopuntia tumida has a loosely shrubby growth. The spherical to briefly ellipsoidal shoot sections are up to 10 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The 90 or more areoles protruding when young are distributed over the entire shoot section. One to seven whitish thorns with a brown tip arise from them , which can occasionally be missing. The thorns are unequal, and the larger ones sub-sub-like. They are up to 4 inches long.
The golden yellow flowers are up to 3.5 centimeters long. Your pericarpel is only covered with areoles in the area of the tip, which have small, fine thorns. The pressed fruits reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters. They are covered with fine thorns.
Distribution and systematics
Cumulopuntia tumida is widespread near the coast in the Peruvian region of Arequipa .
It was first described in 1981 by Friedrich Ritter . A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia tumida (F.Ritter) DRHunt (1997).
