Sequoia Capital is a venture capital investment company founded by Don Valentine in 1972 , which acts as a capital provider for start-up IT companies in the market. According to Sequoia, those companies in which the company has already invested make up around 20 percent of the NASDAQ .

The company is based on Sand Hill Road in California's Silicon Valley . The name Sequoia (English Sequoia " sequoia ") refers to California , Sequoia - & - Kings Canyon National Park . From 1972, Sequoia funded several companies including Atari , FireEye , Yahoo , PayPal , Electronic Arts , YouTube , Meebo , Apple , WhatsApp , Instagram and Google .

Sequoia Capital was founded in 1972 by US venture capitalist Don Valentine in Menlo Park , California . In the mid-1990s, Valentine handed over management to Doug Leone and Michael Moritz. In 1999 the company expanded to Israel. In 2005 Sequoia Capital founded its Chinese counterpart. In 2006 the Indian company Westbridge Capital Partners was bought.

In 2015, Michael Moritz received public criticism for a statement about the lack of cooperation with female investment partners. He had said in an interview that Sequoia Capital would not be willing to lower its standards for women. In 2016, Jess Lee became the first female investment partner.
