The Turkish city of Karaburun is located west of Izmir and bears the same name as the peninsula on which it lies. Karaburun is also the name of a district in the Turkish province of Izmir . After a regional reform, the city is identical in terms of population and area to the district.
history
Although it is not known for sure since when the peninsula was inhabited, traces of settlement from the Chalcolithic period (5000-3000 BC) have been found in various places . A number of tools and utensils from the Bronze Age were found in a grotto just four kilometers from Karaburun City . This means that Karaburun city must have a very long history. The oldest known name for the peninsula is Mimas . During the Ionian Confederation period there was a settlement called Stelar or Stylarius , which is believed to be on the site of what is now Karaburun City. In the Middle Ages, the name Capo Calaberno was used. In the Turkish period, Karaburun City was named Ahurlu or Ahırlı , which means stable . The name Karaburun was only used during the Ottoman rule.
The world-famous navigator Piri Reis (16th century) gives detailed information about the coast of Karaburun in his Kitab-i Bahriye . The Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi , who lived in the second half of the 17th century, visited Karaburun and described the city as “a source of income for the Mollah of Izmir, a place with a mosque, a Turkish bath, seven shops and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards ".
It is quite possible that the name Karaburun was derived from the word Calaberno . Another explanation for the origin of the name would be that in pre-Muslim times the Turkish word "Kara" was used for "north" and "Ak" for "south". Then one could conclude that Karaburun was used to designate the northern cape and Akburun for the more southern cape (Esendere). Karaburun also means black nose (kara: black, dark ; burun: nose ). The mountain at the tip of the peninsula under which the city of Karaburun lies bears the same name. The name can also simply be derived from the shape of the mountain.
