Konak is an administrative district in the Turkish province of Izmir and at the same time a municipality of the Büyükşehir Belediyesi (big city municipality) Izmir . The name Konak is derived from the government building ( Hükümet Konağı ), which was built there between 1868 and 1872 as the seat of the Ottoman governor. The municipality is the rest of the former municipality of Izmir and got its name as İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi after the earlier outskirts were made independent and the core city and outskirts were reorganized and combined .

Konak forms the center of the city of Izmir, the ancient Smyrna , with 113 districts . It is located on the east bank of the Gulf of Izmir ( İzmir Körfezi ) and is bordered by Balçova to the west, Karabağlar to the south, Buca to the southeast , Bornova to the east and Bayraklı to the north . In Konak is the seat of the provincial governor (Vali).

Attractions

In the west on the coast is the district Alsancak with the beach promenade called Kordon , the Ataturk Caddesi . In the south of the district, which roughly coincides with the ancient core of Smyrna, is the former acropolis hill Pagos with the fortress Kadifekale. About a kilometer northwest of it, the remains of the Agora of ancient Smyrna can be seen. The historic Asansör elevator , built in 1907, is located in the western district of Karataş and connects the coastal strip with the hill above. The city's landmark, the clock tower (Saat Kulesi), is also located on the central Konak Square . This tower was built in 1901 and the clockwork was a gift from the then German Emperor Wilhelm II.
