The clock tower of Izmir ( Turkish İzmir Saat Kulesi ) is a historical clock tower built in 1901 on Konak Square in the Konak district of Smyrna, today Izmir in Turkey . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Yalı Mosque .

history

The tower designed by the Levantine - French architect Raymond Charles Péré was built in 1901 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Abdülhamid II (r. 1876–1909). The 25-meter-high tower, with an iron and lead construction and designed in upscale Ottoman architecture , is circularly surrounded by four fountains designed as Şadirvan . The pillars are inspired by Moorish motifs. The clock itself was a gift from the German Emperor Wilhelm II (r. 1888–1918).

The clock tower was depicted on the obverse of the Turkish 500 lira banknotes from 1983 to 1989.

In the former Balkan provinces of the Ottoman Empire , especially in today's Serbian , Bosnian and Montenegrin cities like Belgrade , Prijepolje , Sarajevo , Banja Luka , Gradačac and Stara Varos , there are similar clock towers and are being Sahat Kula called (from the Turkish Saat Kulesi significantly clock tower .)
