Gradačac ( Serbian - Cyrillic Градачац ) is a city in the canton of Tuzla in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina . Gradačac is located on the Gradašnica river between the Majevica and Trebava mountains and has almost 42,000 inhabitants.
geography
Gradačac is part of the Bosanska Posavina region , which includes eight other cities: Bosanski Brod , Derventa , Doboj , Odžak , Bosanski Šamac , Modriča , Orašje and Brčko . These cities are all on the right bank of the Sava River .
history
This region was settled as early as the Neolithic , because the land was very fertile, rich in water thanks to the rivers Usora , Ukrina , Sava and Bosna , which were also rich in fish. The forests offered enough game to hunt. With the arrival of the Romans , the first roads and larger settlements with infrastructure were built. Stone and brick were used for construction. The first Bosnian king Tvrtko I joined the Posavina to Bosnia .
In the 15th century Posavina became part of the Hungarian monarchy again , and so it remained until 1463, when Posavina was also occupied by the Ottomans . In 1719 a peace treaty was signed between the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary , which established the borders between Croatia and Bosnia, which, with a brief interruption between 1939 and 1944, have not changed until today. During the war between 1788 and 1792, the majority of the Croatian Roman Catholic population left the Bosanska Posavina area. After the peace treaty between Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, Croats again settled in the Posavina.
After the Berlin Congress of 1878, Bosnia and Herzegovina and with it the area around Gradačac came completely under the influence of Austria-Hungary. With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy after the First World War , Gradačac became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . On August 29, 1939, the Banschaft Croatia was formed within the Kingdom of Yugoslavia , which in 1941 became the fascist Independent State of Croatia . After the Second World War, Gradačac was again part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, now part of socialist Yugoslavia . Due to the effects of the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995, most of the Bosanska Posavina is now part of the Republika Srpska , while Gradačac was incorporated into the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a result of the Dayton Treaty .
population
Gradačac has around 48,000 inhabitants, making it the fifth largest city in the Tuzla canton . Until the middle of the 18th century, the area around Gradačac was only sparsely populated, only at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century did Gradačac develop into a town.
According to the last census carried out in 1991, there were 56,581 inhabitants in 38 local communities in Gradačac.

There are also numerous cultural institutions named after Husein Kapetan Gradaščević in the old town, such as another museum, a gallery and a library.
Another feature of the city is the Husein Mosque , which is characteristic for its narrow and high minaret and dates from 1786 .
Economy and agricultural fairs
There has been a metalworking industry in Gradačac for 50 years. The company "TMD" AG from Gradačac and the company "CIMOS" AG Koper, Slovenia, have been cooperating since 2001 in the production of turbo compressor parts. Every year in the last week of August there is an agricultural fair, sometimes called the "plum fair". Slivovitz is an export product made from plums from Gradačac .
In addition, the company RINDERZUCHT AUSTRIA and the export company Martin Schwaninger will be represented at the fair. Thanks to the cooperation with the company RINDERZUCHT AUSTRIA, the INMER dairy from Gradačac increased its daily delivery performance from 10,000 kg per day to over 40,000 kg and after the sale to the large French group LACTALIS, the output should increase to up to 200,000 kg per day.

Partnerships
The twin city is Düren in NRW . The partnership between the cities of Gradačac and Düren has existed since 2001. The certificate was signed by Düren's mayor Paul Larue and Gradačac's mayor Ferhat Mustafić on August 16, 2001 in Gradačac and on February 23, 2002 in Düren. The people of the respective cities can understand each other, because both cities were devastated in the war and both offered asylum for refugees. The cooperation is visible in some areas, for example there are three school partnerships and companies in Düren try to help the Gradačac community with the development of the infrastructure. In 1999, the association “Dürener Friends for Gradačac and Bosnia e. V. “founded. The members try to help people in need in Gradačac a little. Another partnership exists with Castenedolo .
