About this picture

Lukavac ( Cyrillic Лукавац) is a small town in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is the main town and administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Tuzla canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

history

Settlement can be proven up to the Bronze Age. The name of the city was first mentioned in 1528, a distinction being made between Gornji (upper) and Donji (lower) Lukavac. In the Austrian census of 1885, the two parts are referred to as Lukavac turski (Turkish) and Lukavac srpski (Serbian).

Lukavac City was only slightly affected by the Bosnian War . Some places like Smoluća, however, were right on the front line and were largely destroyed.

geography

Lukavac is located in the Spreča valley between Tuzla and Doboj at an altitude of 186 m. The foothills of the three low mountain ranges Ozren (in the west), Konjuh (in the south) and Majevica (in the north) extend into the municipality . Between Lukavac and Tuzla there is the Modračko jezero reservoir , which with an area of 17 km² is one of the largest reservoirs in the country and attracts numerous water sports enthusiasts and anglers.

Neighboring municipalities are Banovići , Gračanica , Maglaj , Petrovo , Srebrenik , Tuzla , Zavidovići and Živinice .

population

At the 1991 census, the municipality of Lukavac had 57,070 inhabitants.

12,647 people lived in the city proper.

The municipality includes 44 towns: Babice Donje, Babice Gornje, Berkovica, Bikodže, Bistarac Donji, Bistarac Gornji, Bokavići, Borice, Brijesnica Donja, Brijesnica Gornja, Caparde, Cerik, Crveno Brdo, Devetak, Dobošnica , Gnojnica, Husuškeći Jaruške Gornje, Kalajevo, Komari, Krtova, Kruševica, Lukavac, Lukavac Gornji, Mičijevići, Milino Selo, Modrac, Mosorovac, Orahovica, Poljice, Prline, Prokosovići, Puračić, Smoluća Donja, Smolući , Tumare, Turija, Vasiljevci and Vijenac.

economy

On the basis of the salt, limestone and lignite deposits in the area, a relatively important chemical industry has developed (soda and cement factory). The Modrac lake is also to be used to generate energy through a small hydroelectric power plant (3 MW).

traffic

The Spreča Valley is the shortest connection between the Bosna and Drina valleys and has therefore long been an important trade and transport route. The Doboj – Tuzla railway with the Puračić-Lukavac station has been running here since 1886 . In addition, the M4 magistral road runs through the village. There is a material ropeway for the transport of limestone to the industrial facilities .
