Ilidža ( Serbian - Cyrillic Илиџа ) is an association municipality in the Bosnian canton of Sarajevo with about 66,000 inhabitants. The place lies at the foot of the mountain Igman on the river Željeznica and counts, together with a few other districts, de facto as a suburb of Sarajevo , with which it is closely connected. Sarajevo International Airport is also nearby .
The eastern part of Ilidža, which originally belonged to the municipality, has been part of the town of Istočno Sarajevo in the Republika Srpska since the Bosnian War as Istočna Ilidža .
The name Ilidža comes from the Turkish language (ılıca) and means “natural hot spring, thermal bath”. There are many thermal springs in the village that are rich in sulfur and minerals. Ilidža has been a well-known health resort since Roman times.
geography
In the area of the municipality, the Bosna rises from a strong karst spring ( Vrelo Bosne ) at the foot of the mountain Igman , which joins the Željeznica, which rises further south, in order to flow towards the north of the Sava . From Ilidža, the approximately 2.8 kilometers long Velika aleja (“Great Avenue”) leads to the source of the Bosna. A little further downstream, west of Ilidža, there is an Ottoman stone arch bridge over the Bosna, known as Rimski most (“Roman Bridge”).
Ilidža is located on the Sarajevo – Ploče railway line of the Željeznice Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine (ŽFBH). In 1891 the city was connected to the railway network with the opening of the narrow - gauge Narentabahn . From 1963 to 1966 the Yugoslav State Railways (JŽ) re-routed the railway line and converted it to standard gauge. Ilidža is connected to the city center by the Sarajevo tram .
