Istočno Sarajevo ( Serbian - Cyrillic Источно Сарајево ), in German "East Sarajevo" (until 2004 Srpsko Sarajevo for "Serbian Sarajevo"), is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina . These are the parts of Sarajevo that have been in the Republika Srpska since the Bosnian War , supplemented by some eastern suburban communities. The city was the de jure capital of the Republika Srpska until 2008 - during the war the seat of government was in Pale . However, since 1998 the administrative center of the republic has been in Banja Luka . Around 65,000 people live in the extremely sparsely populated area of Istočno Sarajevo.

geography

The urban area is divided into the municipalities of Istočno Novo Sarajevo , Istočna Ilidža , Istočni Stari Grad , Pale , Trnovo and Sokolac with a total area of over 1400 km². A large part of this area is covered by the forested mountains of the mountain ranges Jahorina (with the Trebević mountain ), Bjelašnica and Romanija , so that one cannot actually speak of a city.

The urban development core is located in Istočno Novo Sarajevo ( Lukavica ) and Istočna Ilidža ( Kasindo and part of Dobrinja ). With the exception of the city of Pale, which grew rapidly after the war, the other municipalities are structured more rural.

It borders the municipalities of Han Pijesak , Kalinovik and Rogatica in the Republika Srpska , Sarajevo-Stari Grad , Sarajevo-Novi Grad , Novo Sarajevo , Sarajevo-Centar , Ilijaš , Ilidža and Trnovo (FBiH) in the canton of Sarajevo , Olovo in the canton of Zenica- Doboj and Pale-Prača and Foča-Ustikolina in the Bosnian Podrinje Canton .
