Peter Poreku Cardinal Dery (born May 10, 1918 in Zemuopare-Ko , Ghana ; † March 6, 2008 in Tamale , Ghana) was Archbishop of Tamale .

Life

Peter Poreku Dery was the fourth of ten children of a fetish priest from the Dagaba tribe . After studying theology and philosophy at the seminaries in Navrongo and Wiagha, he received the sacrament of ordination on February 11, 1951 by the Bishop of Tamale Gérard Bertrand . After that, he initially worked as a pastor . In 1958 he earned a degree in social sciences at the St. Francis Xavier University in Canada and has been at the International Institute for catechesis and pastoral training "Lumen Vitae" in Brussels for the doctor of theology doctorate . In 1959 he was appointed Vicar General of Tamale.

On March 16, 1960 he was by Pope John XXIII. appointed first bishop of the newly established Wa diocese in northern Ghana. The episcopal ordination donated him Pope John XXIII. even on May 8th of the same year in Rome; Co - consecrators were Napoléon-Alexandre Labrie , Bishop of Golfe du Saint-Laurent and Director of the Papal Mission in Canada, and Fulton John Sheen , Auxiliary Bishop in New York and Director of the Papal Mission in the USA. In the same ceremony Paul Zougrana , Jérôme Rakotomalala and Bernard Yago were consecrated. From 1962 to 1965 he took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. In 1972 he also became an Apostolic Administrator of Tamale. On November 18, 1974, Pope Paul VI called him . to the Bishop of Tamale. With the elevation of Tamale to the archbishopric on May 30, 1977, he was appointed the first archbishop of Tamale.

Dery was a member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and Treasurer of the Pan-African Bishops 'Conference and from 1982 to 1988 chairman of the Ghanaian Bishops' Conference. Dery was the bishop commissioner for lay formation in Ghana for 22 years. On March 26, 1994 , after Dery had reached the age of 75 and thus reached the age limit, John Paul II accepted his resignation.

In the solemn consistory on March 24, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI took him . as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Sant'Elena fuori Porta Prenestina in the college of cardinals .

He died of the effects of old age spasticity on March 6, 2008.
