The Bjelašnica ( kyrill. Бјелашница) is a mountain range in central Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located southwest of Sarajevo , directly adjacent to the Igman (1502 meters). The highest peak of Bjelašnica reaches a height of 2067 meters, it is also called Bjelašnica .
The name
The name of the mountain comes from the Slavic root word bijel , which means "white".
geography
Bjelašnica is part of the Dinaric Mountains . It begins about 15 km southwest of the city center of Sarajevo directly behind the municipality of Ilidža and the Igman and extends about 25 km to the Neretva valley . In north-south direction it extends about 15 km.
In the north-east it is bounded by the Igman and then to the south by the valley of the Željeznica , which flows into the Bosna in Ilidža ; behind it are the Jahorina and Treskavica mountain ranges . In the south joins the Visočica , which is separated from the Bjelašnica by the deep ravine of the Rakitnica . In the south-west, the Neretva valley delimits the Prenj mountain range . In the north lies the Neretva-Bosna furrow with the Trešanica valley, another tributary of the Neretva, between Bitovnja and Bjelašnica.
The Bjelašnica area is heavily forested, but the tree growth ends at around 1500 meters. There are numerous hiking trails that are set up and managed by local mountain clubs and lead to the bare peaks.
traffic
Through the Trešanica valley between Neretva and Bosna, an important transport link between the Adriatic and the inland runs past the Bjelašnica. It belongs to the European transport corridor V c with the rail and road connection via Mostar and Sarajevo; in future the A1 motorway will also run here .
Recreation and sport
Located just beyond Sarajevo's city limits, Bjelašnica is a popular recreational area for hiking and skiing .
During the Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo in 1984 , Bjelašnica was used as a competition venue and a. used for men's alpine skiing . The first gold medals for Americans in alpine skiing at the Olympic Games were remarkable: Bill Johnson achieved his gold medal in downhill skiing. The twin brothers Phil and Steve Mahre also won gold and silver in the slalom . The women's alpine competitions were held in Jahorina .
Infrastructure was being improved throughout the area at that time, including hotels and ski resorts. Much of it was destroyed in the Bosnian War and only slowly rebuilt.
