history

Plan of the train

When the 1984 Winter Olympics were awarded to Sarajevo in 1977 , a bobsleigh and toboggan run had to be built. After the building permit was granted, work began on June 1, 1981 and was completed on September 30, 1982 at a total cost of YUD 563,209,000 . The first international competition to be held on the track was the 1983 European Bobsleigh Championship . After the Olympic Winter Games, the track was used for World Cup races until the beginning of the Bosnian War in 1991. The track was also the venue for the European Skeleton Championships in 1985 , 1987 and 1988 . The railway was badly damaged during the war. In the course of the siege of Sarajevo , the railway high above the city was used by Bosnian Serb troops as an artillery position. After the end of the war, the area around the bobsled run was mined until the 2000s. Nevertheless, the railway itself was u. a. used for graffiti and cycling. Restoration work began in 2014 so that the track can be used for summer tobogganing and other summer activities. With the hosting of the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2019 in Sarajevo, there were considerations to hold races on the track, but these plans were not implemented due to the high costs.
