On the Austro-Hungarian Fort Draguljac was in the 1960s by the Astronomical Society Orion the observatory built. In the early 1980s, the facility was expanded with a new eight-meter tower.

The observatory was a major tourist attraction until it was destroyed in the Bosnian War and has not been rebuilt to this day. There have been no serious astronomical research instruments in the country since their destruction, although interest in them is great among the younger generation. The facility is right next to the finish area of the bobsleigh and toboggan run of the 1984 Winter Olympics on a popular hiking trail from Sarajevo to Trebević Mountain . The inner Bosnian entity line to the Republika Srpska runs just 180 meters to the west . The striking building remains in the flat promontory is a highly visible landmark . Because of this strategically important location, the position in the war was hotly contested.
