The Trebević cable car ( Serbo-Croatian  Trebevićka žičara / Требевићка жичара ) is a gondola lift that leads from downtown Sarajevo to the slopes of the local mountain Trebević . The cable car, which opened in 1959, was destroyed during the Bosnian War of 1992-95, rebuilt in 2017 and reopened in 2018. The cable car played a special role during the 1984 Winter Olympics , as it facilitated access from the city to the competition venues on Trebević. The route was opened on April 6, 2018, the day of the city of Sarajevo and the 26th anniversary of the start of theSiege of Sarajevo , reopened.

The 2.1-kilometer route leads from the base station in the Sarajevo district of Bistrik (583 m) to the "Ramo Biber" mountain station near the Olympic bobsleigh run on the Vidikovac peak (1160 m) on the Trebević slope.

Technical specifications

The new cable car has 33 cabins with space for ten passengers each, which corresponds to a capacity of 1200 passengers per hour. In contrast to the old cable car, which took twelve minutes to travel from the base station to Vidikovac, the new cable car covers the distance in seven minutes and 15 seconds.

history

The original cable car to Sarajevo's local mountain was put into operation on May 3, 1959 and belonged to the municipal transport company GRAS Sarajevo .

After the collapse of Yugoslavia, the cable car was initially operated until the beginning of March 1992. On March 2, 1992 at around 2 p.m., the cable car worker Ramo Biber was shot dead by unknown gunmen who tried to seize the cable car's mountain station. Beaver is therefore considered to be the first to die in the siege of Sarajevo . During the war in Bosnia that followed, most of the cable car's technical systems were destroyed. Recommissioning after the war was initially made more difficult by unresolved ownership and conflicts between the urban transport company GRAS and the city of Sarajevo.

The reconstruction of the railway started in 2016 and was carried out by the South Tyrolean company Leitner . The first test drives with the new gondolas took place in January 2018.
