The Treskavica ( Serbian - Cyrillic Трескавица ) is a mountain range belonging to the Dinarides in the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina , about 25 kilometers south of Sarajevo . Its highest peak - the 2086  m high Dokin Toranj  - is the highest point in the capital region and the seventh highest point in the whole country.

location

The Treskavica massif is located southeast of Trnovo and northwest of Kalinovik and extends over a length of over 20 kilometers. It is on the north by the ridge of Hojta with the Bjelasnica connected; in the southeast the massif merges into the Šivolje plateau. In the east, the Rogoj represents the connection to the Jahorina massif. Only in the west is the Treskavica sharply delimited and is separated from the neighboring Visočica massif by the up to 850 m deep valley of the river Ljuta .

Since 1995 the inner-Bosnian border between the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska has been running roughly in the middle of the mountain range .

Abundance of water

The Treskavica is one of the most water-rich mountains in Bosnia and is located on the watershed between the Adriatic and the Black Sea . While the rivers Rakitnica and Ljuta, which arise on the western edge, flow into the Neretva and thus the Adriatic, the rivers Željeznica and Bistrica, which arise on the east side, drain into the Black Sea via Bosna and Drina respectively .

In Treskavica there are also countless springs and several lakes; the most famous are Crno jezero ("Black Lake"), Veliko jezero ("Big Lake") and Bijelo jezero ("White Lake") near Trnovo.

vegetation

While the high plateau of the Karst Mountains is only sparsely overgrown, the eastern and southern foothills of the Treskavica in particular are characterized by the typical karst log dump fir forest.

tourism

Treskavica is a popular destination for hikers. Its main peaks are accessible from the north and northeast via marked trails. The most popular route leads from Trnovo past the three mountain lakes up to Dokin Toranj. That part of the Treskavica south of the Dokin Toranj, however, was the immediate combat area in the Bosnian War . Large areas here have been mined to this day and cannot be entered.
