Andrew Wenger (born December 25, 1990 in Lancaster , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American football player .

Career

Wenger started his senior career in 2009 with the Duke Blue Devils , the team at Duke University in the state of North Carolina . There he prevailed as a defender in his first season and played in all 21 games of the university team from the start, scoring four goals and three assists. In the 2010 season Wenger played again almost all games from the start and was recognized for his achievements as the best defender of the Atlantic Coast Conference . At the same time he also appeared for Reading United in the USL Premier Development League and played 13 games there.

Wenger moved from defense to forward position in the 2011 season and scored 17 goals that season, making him the Blue Devils' top scorer. For his achievements, he was named the best striker of the Atlantic Coast Conference a year after being named best defender. He also succeeded in winning the Hermann Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best college player in the United States. At the MLS SuperDraft 2012, the Entry Draft of Major League Soccer , he was selected as the first overall by the expansion team Montreal Impact .

Wenger played his first major league soccer game on March 10, 2012 against the Vancouver Whitecaps when he was substituted on in the 72nd minute. He scored his first goal for Montréal in the 2-1 win over Toronto FC , which was also the team's first win in the MLS.

On April 4, 2014, Wenger moved to the Philadelphia Union in exchange for Jack McInerney .
