Houston Dynamo is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Houston , Texas .

Dynamo became part of Major League Soccer in late 2005 when the San José Earthquakes team relocated to Houston after the 2005 MLS season . The team and employees were transferred to the new franchise from Texas.

history

The Houston Dynamo team was formed on December 15, 2005, after the San José Earthquakes team was relocated because the owners were unable to build a football stadium . All of the Earthquakes players and coaching staff moved to Houston. The name Earthquakes, the associated logo and the history of the MLS franchise were not taken over. This became active again in 2007 when the Earthquakes returned to the MSL. Houston Dynamo was officially a new team within the league, similar to the Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League .

The choice of name

On January 25, 2006 it was announced that the team will be named "Houston 1836". The name was chosen through an online vote. In addition to 1836, the names Apollos, Bulls, Eagles, Gatos, Lonestars, Stallions, Toros, Americans, Buffalos, Generals, Mustangs and Stars were available. According to the MLS and owner, the name 1836 refers to the year the city of Houston was founded by brothers August Chapman and John Kirby Allan.

However, 1836 was also the year Texas gained independence from Mexico . As a result, the name caused an uproar among parts of the city's Mexican population in 1836. There were boycott threats from politics, the media and business. Finally, the name "Houston Dynamo" was chosen, based on many successful sports clubs from the former Eastern Bloc, such as Dynamo Dresden , Dynamo Moscow , Dinamo Zagreb and Dynamo Kiev .

After the "1836 debacle", the MLS decided not to carry out any more internet votes on club names in the future.

First season 2006

Houston Dynamo's first game took place on April 2, 2006 against the Colorado Rapids . Brian Ching scored four goals for Dynamo in this, becoming the first goalscorer in the history of the franchise. In the further course of the regular season, the team was able to achieve important victories against the established teams of the league. At the end of the season, Houston finished second in the Western Conference behind local rivals FC Dallas . In the following playoffs, the team won the conference semi-final against CD Chivas USA and the conference final against the Colorado Rapids went to the team from Texas. In the final of the MLS Cup , the team faced New England Revolution . At Pizza Hut Park it was 0-0 after regular time. After the Revs took the lead, Dynamo leveled with a goal from Ching. The Texans only secured the MLS Cup 2006 on penalties, as Pat Noonan failed to score and Jay Heaps could save the shot. With this victory, the team qualified for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup 2007 .

2007: repetition of success

The 2007 season started earlier for the Texas team due to qualification for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. In the quarter-finals, the team won over Puntarenas FC from Costa Rica. The first leg on February 21, 2007 was lost 0-1, but a 2-0 victory was achieved in the second leg. Kelly Gray scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute. In the semi-finals, the team met the Mexican club CF Pachuca . Houston won the first leg 2-0, but they lost the second leg 2-5 after extra time.

As in the previous year, Dynamo took second place in the Western Conference in Major League Soccer. In the first playoff game, FC Dallas could be defeated in the second game after extra time. In the conference finals, Nate Jaqua and Brian Ching secured their entry into the MLS Cup with their goals. As in the previous year, the pairing was again Houston Dynamo versus New England Revolution. Joseph Ngwenya and Ching scored for the Texans in the second half, the game ended 2-1 and Houston was able to defend his title, which no team had managed since 1997.

In the same year, Major League Soccer recommended Anschutz Entertainment Group to sell the owners of the franchise Houston Dynamo. The reason was the concern of the MLS that each owner group only supports one team, but AEG also owns the Los Angeles Galaxy . As a result, negotiations were started to sell Houston Dynamo.

2008–2012

On February 26, 2008, the President of Houston Dynamo announced that the Anschutz Entertainment Group will only hold 50% of the shares in the franchise in the future. The Brener International Group and Golden Boy Promotions each acquired 25%.

By winning the MLS Cup, Houston Dynamo took part in the 2008 CONCACAF Champions' Cup . They reached the semi-finals, but lost to Deportivo Saprissa from Costa Rica. In 2008 the team qualified again for the playoffs. In the quarter-finals, the defending champion was unable to prevail against the New York Red Bulls. In the newly created CONCACAF Champions League 2008/09 Houston reached the quarterfinals, but lost to CF Atlante from Mexico with 0-0 and 0-3 and was eliminated.

In 2009 they reached the playoffs as the second best team in the Western Conference and third best in the league. This time it was over in the semifinals when they lost out to the Los Angeles Galaxy. In the CONCACAF Champions League 2009/10 you couldn't get beyond the group stage. In 2010 they finished only a disappointing seventh place in the Western Conference and could not qualify for the playoffs for the first time in the club's history.

For the 2011 season, the team changes from the Western to the Eastern Conference, as the league has added two new expansion teams ( Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps ), both of which start in the Western Conference. The team was able to achieve 2nd place in the conference and played its way through the playoffs to the final, where they lost 1-0 to the LA Galaxy .

The 2012 season was marked by the opening of the new stadium. Because the opening was delayed, Houston Dynamo played the first seven games of the season away from home. On May 12, the stadium was inaugurated with the 1-0 win over DC United . In the regular season they reached just under fifth place in the Eastern Conference. In the subsequent play-offs, Dynamo played its way into the final of the MLS Cup. As in the previous year, they lost 3-1 to Los Angeles Galaxy.

Since 2013

The next few years were rather less successful. In 2013 you could reach the play-offs again and had to admit defeat in the Conference Final. The 2014 season ended the team in 8th place in the West Conference. Due to the poor performance, long-time coach Dominic Kinnear had to leave the club. Even under the new coach Owen Coyle , the team could not celebrate any more successes. During the 2016 season, an agreement was reached to terminate the contract with Coyle. Former Dynamo player Wade Barrett took over on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Since October 28, 2016, the Colombian Wilmer Cabrera is the new coach of the Texans.

Coat of arms and colors

The Houston Dynamo coat of arms consists of the colors black, orange and white. There is a star under the central Dynamo lettering, the rays of which run through the coat of arms. This could be a reference to the star of the Texan flag or simply a symbol of strength or success (e.g. sheriff star). Due to the two championships, the team is also allowed to have two championship stars above the coat of arms.

Stadion

Houston Dynamo has played its home games at BBVA Compass Stadium since the 2012 season . The stadium holds 22,000 spectators and is located near Minute Maid Park in the east of the city center. The stadium is named after and sponsored by BBVA Compass, a subsidiary of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria .

Fans, mascots and rivals

Fan groups

In its very first season, the MLS franchise had a very good number of followers. In the first game there were 25,462 spectators in the stadium. In the coming years this volume was reduced, but still strongly organized fan groups were formed. The two largest fan groups are El Batallón and Texian Army.

The team had the highest attendance on August 9 in a game at Reliant Stadium in Houston against the Los Angeles Galaxy. Before the game, the encounter between FC Barcelona and the Mexican club Club América took place, which saw 70,550 spectators, from which the Houston game also benefited.

mascot

In 2007 Houston Dynamo was looking for a mascot and asked members of the Art Institute of Houston. Several proposals were submitted and the winner, an orange-colored fox named Dynamo Diesel , was selected via an online survey . It was unveiled at the Houston Zoo on April 3, 2007. Since then, the fox has been seen at Dynamo games and other events.

Rivalries

Houston’s biggest rival is FC Dallas . Each season both teams play the "Texas Derby", also known as "El Capitán Clasico". This MLS Rivalry Cup is decided by the direct encounters during the regular season. The winner will receive an 18th century cannon, the El Capitán. There is also a league rivalry with Sporting Kansas City .

Organization, sponsorship and media

owner

The Anschutz Entertainment Group holds 50% of the shares in the Houston Dynamo franchise. The company is a global sports and entertainment company. In addition to Dynamo, the group also includes the MLS franchise Los Angeles Galaxy, the NHL club Los Angeles Kings and the DEL teams Eisbären Berlin and Hamburg Freezers .

The owners also include the Golden Boy Promotions, which are based in Los Angeles. The organization around the former boxer Óscar de la Hoya acquired 25% of the rights. The investment firm Brener International Group also owns 25% of the shares in the MLS franchise.

Sponsors

Since the 2007 season it has been allowed to sign sponsorship contracts in Major League Soccer. The first shirt sponsor was the Texan energy company Amigo Energy, which paid 7.5 million US dollars for four years. Dynamo was the fifth MLS team to win a shirt sponsor.

As of the 2011 season, the recycling company Greenstar took the place on the chest, paying $ 2.5 million per season for three years. For the 2014 season, a new shirt sponsor was found in the mining company BHP Billiton .

media

The radio broadcasts in English are carried out by the radio station CBS Radio Houston .
