College Station is a city in Brazos County in the US state of Texas in the United States . The city is home to Texas A&M University with around 45,000 students.

geography

The city is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas, surrounded by several lakes such as Somerville Lake , Lake Conroe , Gibbons Creek Reservoir , Lake Limestone or Lake Bryan and has a total area of ​​64.84 km 2 , of which 0.7 km 2 is water .

history

In 1860 the Houston and Texas Central Railway was laid through this area and a small town developed from a railroad settlement. In 1871 the decision was made to build A&M College and five years later, Texas A&M University, the first public university in Texas, opened its doors.

In 1938 College Station was granted town charter and two years later the population had grown to 2,184. In 1950 there were 7,898 and in 1960 there were already 11,396 inhabitants. The city wrote sad headlines in 1999 when an accident killed 12 people and injured 27 while setting up the annual Aggie Bonfire , a traditional bonfire on the university campus.
