history

Kyle Field around 1920

In the fall of 1904, Edwin Jackson Kyle , a horticultural professor who graduated from Texas A&M University in 1899, was elected president of the sports association. Since the university did not want to provide funding for a sports field, he unceremoniously fenced in an area that the university had made available to him for agricultural purposes. With $ 650 of his own money, he bought a covered grandstand and built more uncovered grandstand seats out of wood to accommodate 500 spectators.

On November 10, 1904, the university management subsequently established the field as the official home of the football and baseball teams and named the field after its founder.

In 1927 a new stadium was built for $ 345,000. The first extensions were made in 1929, giving the stadium a horseshoe shape and increasing capacity to 33,000. The capacity was increased again in 1969, to 49,000 viewers at a cost of 1.84 million US dollars. In 1979 a third deck was added to the stadium, increasing the capacity to 72,000. Since the expansion in 1999, the official capacity has been 82,600. Additional temporary seats will be installed for very popular games.

In May 2013, a 450 million US dollar renovation and expansion of the stadium began. The expansion comprised several phases, each of which was outside of the football season and ran from 2013 to 2015. The conversion ultimately cost $ 483,888,885.

The Texas A&M Aggies have had Reveille (The “First Lady” of Texas A&M University) as their official mascot since 1931 . Reveille IX is now the Aggies' lucky charm . The university set up a grave at the stadium for its predecessors. All were buried with a view of the stadium. After a renovation of the stadium, the view was blocked. Thereupon the tomb got its own small display board so that the mascots can follow the scores of the Aggies .
