Enrique Zuazua Iriondo (born September 28, 1961 in Eibar ) is a Spanish ( Basque ) mathematician who deals with partial differential equations , control theory and numerical analysis .

Zuazua studied at the Technical University in Eibar and at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) with a degree in 1984 and a doctorate in 1987 with Alain Haraux (dissertation: Control y estabilización de algunas ecuaciones de evolució) and the following year he received his doctorate again at the University of Paris VI (Dissertation: Comportement global et contrôlabilité exacte pour certainsproblemèmes de type hyperbolique). He then taught at the University of the Basque Country, was a lecturer at the Autonomous University of Madrid and, from 1990, professor of applied mathematics at the Complutense University of Madrid . In 2001 he moved back to the Autonomous University of Madrid as a professor of applied mathematics. He is also a professor at the Universidad de Deusto in Bilbao.

From 2008 to 2012 he was the founding director of the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) in Bilbao , where he was a research professor until 2015. He was visiting professor at the Courant Institute in New York, in Rio de Janeiro, at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge and at the École Polytechnique . From 1999 to 2002 he was the first scientific head of mathematics in Spanish national research planning.

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2006 in Madrid (Control and numerical approximation of the wave and heat equation) . In 2014 he received an honorary doctorate from the Université de Lorraine . In 2013 he received the Humboldt Research Award , with which he was at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) from 2014 to 2015 . In 2015 he became FAU ambassador. In 2006 he received the Prix Euskadi and in 2007 the Julio Rey Pastor Prize. He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2015 . He received an ERC Advanced Grant ( Numeriwaves , numerical aspects of wave propagation) in 2010 and one for Dynamic Control (DyCon) in 2016 . He is an honorary doctor of the Université de Lorraine.

In 2019 Zuazua was appointed to an Alexander von Humboldt professorship at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg .
