Eibar (Spanish: Éibar ) is a city in the province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country Autonomous Community in Spain .
geography
Eibar is located 121 m above sea level in the Deba basin in the far west of the province of Gipuzkoa on the border with Bizkaia . The climate is maritime with mild winters and cool summers. The city is located in a narrow valley in a mountainous area, the elevations around the city have heights of 700 to 800 m.
The river Ego flows through Eibar and flows into the Deba in the urban area .
history
The city was documented on February 5, 1346 as Villanueva de San Andrés de Eibar by Alfonso XI. founded by Castile .
On April 14, 1931 Éibar proclaimed the Second Republic as one of the first municipalities in Spain . During the Spanish Civil War , Éibar was in the republican part of Spain until the fall in April 1937 and then fell into the hands of the Franquists .
Economy and Infrastructure
Weapons have been manufactured in the city since the late Middle Ages. An important arms manufacturer was z. B. STAR, Bonifacio Echeverría SA Today the focus of the industry is on mechanical engineering and the manufacture of automotive parts. One of the most important companies in today's Eibar is the former sewing machine manufacturer and today's mechanical engineering group Alfa.
Eibar is located on the AP-8 motorway halfway between San Sebastián and Bilbao . The national road of the Spanish north coast N-634, which also connects the city with San Sebastián and Bilbao, runs through Eibar. Eibar is also connected to the AP-1 Vitoria- Eibar motorway.
The Basque narrow-gauge railway EuskoTren connects Eibar with San Sebastián and with Bilbao.
Eibar does not have its own airport. The nearest airports are those of Bilbao (Loiu), San Sebastián (Hondarribia) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (Foronda), each an hour's drive from Eibar.
Sports
The city's football club, Sociedad Deportiva Eibar , rose to the first Spanish league for the first time in its club history on May 25, 2014. As of autumn 2019, the club has been able to defend its membership of the Primera División so far.
The Euskal Bizikleta ends on the Arrate mountain near Eibar.
The city is also home to the Frontón Astelena sports arena for the Basque national sport of pelota .
