The Deba ( Basque Deba ibaia ; Spanish Río Deva ) is a coastal river in the Spanish Basque Country .

course

The river rises from several source streams in the west of the Sierra de Elgea . Its origin is about five kilometers south of the town of Leintz-Gatzaga on the border of the provinces of Álava and Gipuzkoa . From there it flows through the eponymous north Comarcas Debagoiena (span .: Alto Deva "Upper Deba") and Debabarrena (span .: Bajo Deva "Lower Deba") to the west of Gipuzkoa before after 58 km in he Deba in the Bay of Biscay flows into it.

The Deba used to be navigable below Elgoibar , where an important trading port was located in the Alzola district .
