Francisco de Ibarra (* 1539 in Éibar , Basque Country , Spain ; † 1575 in Pánuco , Mexico ) was a Spanish explorer and conqueror who opened up northern Mexico in particular for the Spanish.

Life

Francisco's uncle, the conquistador Diego de Ibarra, sent him to the front as a conqueror at the age of 15. He was given the task of conquering and colonizing the territory that today makes up the Mexican state of Durango .

In 1554 Ibarra Fresnillo and 1562/63 founded the cities of Victoria de Durango and Nombre de Dios , which led to his appointment as general captain of Nueva Vizcaya ("New Basque Country"); He also fought repeatedly against the Chichimec Indians and pursued an intensive search for new silver mines, which ultimately made him wealthy.
