Nombre de Dios is a small town with approx. 6,000 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality (municipio) with a total of approx. 22,000 inhabitants in the state of Durango in Mexico . The - partly in ruins - mission churches of the town and its surroundings are since 2010 as part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro to UNESCO - World Heritage Site . The historical town center has been recognized as Pueblo Mágico since 2018 .
Location and climate
The small town of Nombre de Dios is located about 53 km southeast of the capital of the state, Victoria de Durango , at an altitude of about 1735 m . The climate is mostly dry and warm; Rain (approx. 440 mm / year) falls predominantly in the summer half of the year.

The vast majority of the population is of Indian descent, but there are also numerous mestizos .
economy
The area around the village is comparatively rich in forests and water. Mainly corn , beans, melons, etc. are grown .
history
The Spanish conquistador Francisco de Ibarra and / or members of the Franciscan order founded a mission station here in 1563, from which large parts of northern Mexico were evangelized. In the following centuries the place grew into a small town with a straight road network.
Attractions
- The church of San Pedro Apóstol was not built until the 19th century on the site of an older previous building. The cross- mounted buttress arches of the nave are peculiar to Mexico .
- The Templo de Jesús Nazareno was located in the former Indian quarter and was restored to its present state in the 18th century.
- Surroundings
- There are several churches from the 16th to 18th centuries, some of which have been abandoned and are in ruins, in the immediate and wider area. Some of them have enormous side buttresses for stabilization.
