Red Circle Authors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Red Circle Authors is a British publisher based in London that specializes in Japanese fiction.

background

Red Circle Authors was founded in 2016 by Richard Nathan and Koji Chikatani with the aim of promoting Japan's best fiction abroad. The Gutai group was the inspiration for founding Red Circle Authors.

The Red Circle authors currently include Kazufumi Shiraishi , Fuminori Nakamura , Mitsuyo Kakuta , Takuji Ichikawa and Roger Pulvers .

Currently only a small number of the works by Red Circle authors are available in translation outside of Japan, although they have won numerous literary prizes in Japan, for example the Naoki Prize ( Mitsuyo Kakuta 2005, Kazufumi Shiraishi 2010) and the Akutagawa Prize ( Fuminori Nakamura 2005) ; and many works have already been released in film and television versions.

Some of the group's authors have already built a solid reputation in Asia (in China, Taiwan, Korea, and Thailand, among others) and are starting to win international literary awards. Fuminori Nakamura, for example, won the David L. Goodis Prize in 2014.

Imprint and series

Red Circle Authors publishes under the imprint Red Circle.

Red Circle Authors started this imprint and the publishing program on November 23, 2018 with the publication of the first series Red Circle Minis and the delivery of the first three Minis:

Stand-In Companion by Kazufumi Shiraishi, Backlight by Kanji Hanawa and Tokyo Performance by Roger Pulvers.

Reviewers described the works as an homage to textual brevity in book form, a long-standing tradition in Japan.
