David Goodis

David Goodis (born March 2, 1917 in Philadelphia, † January 7, 1967 in Philadelphia ) was an American writer and screenwriter.

Goodis grew up in Philadelphia and studied journalism. In 1938 he moved to New York and wrote, also under various pseudonyms, for magazine magazines. During this time his first novel Retreat from Oblivion was published . In the following years, Goodis mainly wrote radio play series for the radio. After initially some of his short stories did not meet with interest from film producers, his work Dark Passage, initially published as a serialized novel, was a great success and was filmed in 1947 with Humphrey Bogart and Laureen Bacall in the leading roles. A few other novels were also made into films. Goodis is considered one of the most important authors of film noir . After his death, his works were hardly printed in the USA, but his literature met with interest, especially in France. Goodis died of a stroke at the age of 49 .
