content

The thief Azad ( Persian : آزاد ( āzād ) free ) robbed a villa in Athens at night with his accomplices Ralph, Renzi and Hélène, who were smearers, and looted several dozen emeralds. The corrupt Greek commissioner Zacharia is on patrol and almost gets to the burglars. However, Azad can fake a broken car and tells Zacharia that he works as a doll seller. Zacharia leaves him unmolested for the time being.

Since the ship with which the crooks want to flee Greece the next day is not operational, they have to go into hiding in the country for some time. Hélène takes a ferry to an island and spends her vacation there. Ralph and Renzi go into hiding in a toy store and Azad tries to get rid of Zacharia, who is trying to get his booty off. A spectacular chase ensues between the two , but ends with Azad driving into a closed road and being stopped by Zacharia. Since Azad has placed an empty suitcase in the car, the meeting ends without consequences for him. Azad then meets the model Lena in the hotel, with whom he has fun, at the same time Zacharia penetrates the camp and kills Renzi. One evening when he was eating steak and french fries in a tavern , Zacharia sat down at his table, ordered several plates of Greek food for both of them and, while he was explaining Greek cuisine to Azad, presented him with a deal that would leave Azad with no punishment for the country can leave if he tells Zachariah by the next evening where the samaragds are. He does not agree to the opportunity to share the booty with Azad.

The next day, Azad and Ralph meet Zacharia at the camp; when they could have killed him, however, they let go of him and flee through a window. When Azad is back at the hotel and wants to meet Lena at the bar, he notices that Hélène is back in Athens because she accuses Azad of infidelity. The hotel is stormed by the police the next day, and Azad manages to escape by holding onto a bus and finally ending up in an amusement park unnoticed on the back of a truck, which later dumps him on a hill.

When Azad meets Lena again, he sees photos in which she is posing with Zacharia and he realizes that she has lured him into a trap. From then on, Lena promises to work for Azad and drives him to the Hotel Hélènes in an eye-catching circus car. There he has to overpower her Greek lover, whom she met on the island. When Azad is left with the two women, he chooses Hélène, whom he confesses his love to. On the quay, Azad, Ralph and Hélène are picked up again by Zacharia and an army of police officers, with Zacharia Ralph arrested and the accomplice granted safe conduct, but suddenly wants to make fifty-fifty with Azad. However, Azad manages to eliminate Zacharia in a grain silo and get onto the ship unnoticed by the police using a goods crane.

criticism

"Not always free of clichés and lengths, the detective film, which is staged at high speed in places, nevertheless offers exciting diversion."

“A super coup by director Henri Verneuil. His film from 1971 has Rififi refinement, Hitchcock high tension, capra caprioles and Wilder wit. Verneuil once again found the ideal star for this crime comedy in Jean-Paul Belmondo, who had previously played the leading roles in Verneuil's directorial work " 100,000 Dollars in the Sun " and " Dunkirk, June 2, 1940 ". Later the two filmed " Fear Over the City " and " The Body of My Enemy " together. "
