The Prescott National Forest is a 1.25 million acres (5050 km² ) national forest located in central Arizona near the city of Prescott , United States . The forest is in the mountains southwest of Flagstaff and north of Phoenix in Yavapai County , with a small portion (about 3.5 percent) extending into southwest Coconino County . The forest administration is located in Prescott.
history
The forest was created by the General Land Office on May 10, 1898. It was transferred to the Forest Service in 1906 and converted into a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908, he took the Verde National Forest and on October 22, 1934 the Tusayan National Forest .
Wilderness Areas
There are eight designated wilderness areas, over 421 km², all or part of which are within the Prescott National Forest.
- Apache Creek Wilderness
- Castle Creek Wilderness
- Cedar Bench Wilderness
- Granite Mountain Wilderness
- Juniper Mesa Wilderness
- Pine Mountain Wilderness (mostly in the Tonto National Forest )
- Sycamore Canyon Wilderness (partly in Coconino National Forest and Kaibab National Forest )
- Woodchute Wilderness
